Authorities in Somalia's breakaway state of Somaliland arrested a human rights worker visiting the separatist region's capital of Hargeisa, the Radio Garowe correspondent reported Friday.
Ali "Fadhaa" Sheikh Yasin, who is the acting head of Mogadishu-based Elman human rights group, was arrested by security forces four days ago and is still being held at police headquarters in Hargeisa, a Somaliland government official said on the condition of anonymity.
An unconfirmed number of people who traveled to Hargeisa to attend a seminar were also arrested along with Mr. Ali Fadhaa, the source added.
The Somaliland administration has not spoken publicly about the recent arrests, which come a week after three suicide bombers killed at least 20 people in Hargeisa. Full story
The Elman human rights group is very active in Mogadishu where the organization collects data on civilian deaths and injuries over the course of an ongoing two-year insurgency against Ethiopian forces, and is a primary source for lo cal and international media reporting about war deaths in Somalia.
